In older Carthagos with an Alde system, an airlock in the central heating pipes is the classic culprit: the pump runs, but the warm glycol doesn't reach the radiators. So first check whether the display shows a fault code and whether the room thermostat is actually calling for heat.
The exact cause depends on the type of heating and the model year of your Carthago. A Truma Combi reacts differently to a faulty circuit board than an Alde system to an airlock, and an empty gas bottle is quickly ruled out but not always the main suspect.
A cold Carthago is annoying, especially when you're on the road. Carthago typically installs Truma Combi units (gas or diesel) in the more compact models, while the higher ranges often have an Alde water heating system. Each system has its own typical quirks.
If a Truma Combi won't start, first check that there is enough gas or diesel and that the fuses are intact. A common cause is a blocked burner or a faulty ignition. A flat battery or a poor earth connection can also confuse the electronics. Sometimes a reset of the circuit board helps, but often a component needs to be replaced. Expect to pay 150 to 400 euros for a diagnosis and small repair, depending on the fault.
With an Alde system, you can usually hear the circulation pump humming. If the water remains cold, there may be air in the system, the pump may be faulty, or the heating element may not be working. A broken thermostat or a leaking hose can also occur. Bleeding and refilling the fluid often costs 80 to 150 euros, but a new pump or element can run up to 500 euros or more.
