A Hymer fridge that no longer cools on all three power sources often points to an electronic fault.

A Hymer fridge that no longer cools on any power source (12V, 230V or gas) in most cases has a faulty circuit board or an interrupted power supply to the control unit. Sometimes it is a loose plug or a blown fuse, but with older units a worn thermocouple or a blocked gas burner is also a common culprit. Therefore, first have a targeted diagnosis carried out to avoid unnecessary replacement costs.
With a Hymer, the exact cause depends on the built-in brand (usually Dometic or Thetford) and the year of manufacture, but the basic diagnosis remains similar.
Hymer has been fitting fridges from Dometic and Thetford for years, depending on the model and year of manufacture. Both brands have their own typical niggles, but most problems can be traced back to three systems: the 12V supply, the 230V connection, or the gas section. If your fridge does not work on any power source, there is a good chance that the electronic control unit or the power module is faulty. If it works on gas but not on electricity, it is often down to a fuse or a faulty relay.
Always start by checking the main fuse and the 12V supply to the fridge. On Dometic models with an AES system (automatic energy selection), an error code on the display can tell you a lot. For this, refer to our general guide to a fridge that is not working for a full step-by-step plan.
On Dometic fridges from the RMS 8 series or newer, a faulty circuit board is relatively common, especially after a power surge. The thermocouple (for gas operation) can also come loose or wear out. On Thetford (often the N series), problems with the burner unit or a blocked gas line are more well-known. If in doubt, always have a gas pressure test carried out.
Repair costs vary. A new circuit board for a Dometic will easily set you back between 200 and 400 euros, excluding fitting. A burner unit for a Thetford is around 100 to 200 euros. Sometimes, however, the fault is simple to fix, such as a loose plug or a dirty burner. So have a camper technician carry out a diagnosis first.
If the repair proves too costly or you are fed up with the hassle, selling could be a sensible option. We buy Hymer campers in any condition, even with a faulty fridge. Find out how much your Hymer is still worth or immediately calculate the market value of your motorhome.
