Buying a used motorhome is a smart way to enjoy the freedom of the camper life without the high price of a new one. But a used vehicle also raises questions: is the engine still reliable, what about damp, and which paperwork do you need? In this guide, we walk you through step by step what to look out for, so you can hit the road with peace of mind.
A used motorhome is often the most accessible way to discover the camper life. You pay less than for a new model, and the supply is large: from compact van conversions to spacious A-class models. Moreover, many motorhomes are still in excellent condition after a few years, especially if the previous owner kept up with maintenance.
Note: a used motorhome is not a caravan or a static caravan. We are talking here about vehicles with their own engine, such as a motorhome, campervan, or van conversion. You can simply drive it with a regular car licence, and you don't need a separate tow bar.
A thorough inspection is the most important step when buying a used motorhome. Start with the exterior: look for rust, damage to the bodywork, and the condition of the tyres. Also check that all lockers and windows close properly, and that there are no cracks in the body panels.
Inside, damp is the biggest enemy. Watch out for musty smells, loose wallpaper, or discolouration around windows and roof lights. Ask if you can look under mattresses and in cupboards. A damp meter can help, but a simple press of your hand on the walls says a lot: a spongy feel indicates water damage.
Don't forget the mechanical side. Let the engine run, check the mileage, and ask for the service history. A recent roadworthiness test and invoices for servicing are a good sign. In doubt? Have an independent expert take a look, that can prevent a lot of trouble.
A used motorhome comes with the right documents. Always ask for the certificate of conformity, the roadworthiness certificate, and the service booklet. Check that the chassis number on the papers matches the number in the vehicle.
In Belgium, a used vehicle must be tested before sale, unless it is a recent model. The seller must also be able to present a Car-Pass, which states the mileage. That way you know for sure the odometer hasn't been tampered with.
For a motorhome, the registration is sometimes different from a regular car, depending on the weight and the number of seats. If in doubt, check with the DIV or an approved testing station which steps you need to follow.
The purchase price is only part of the story. Take into account the annual road tax, insurance, and the costs for maintenance and storage. A used motorhome can be more advantageous in that respect than a new model, but here too: the older the vehicle, the greater the chance of repairs.
Also think about practical matters such as winter tyres, a new gas bottle, or a thorough cleaning of the water system. If you're handy, you can do a lot yourself. For more complex jobs such as sealing a leak or repairing the engine, a specialist is often the best choice. Read more about maintenance in our guide on motorhome maintenance and its costs.
You can buy a used motorhome from a specialised dealer, from a private seller, or at an auction. Each option has advantages and disadvantages. A dealer often offers a warranty and an inspection, but the price is higher. From a private seller you usually pay less, but you have to check more thoroughly yourself.
Be careful: not every seller is equally reliable. Be alert to offers that seem too good to be true, unclear paperwork, or sellers who won't allow a viewing. Always ask for a test drive and take your time to check everything.
Do you have a motorhome you want to sell? Then a buyer can be a quick and easy solution. We only buy vehicles with their own engine, such as motorhomes, campervans, and van conversions. Read more about how that works on our page about selling your motorhome for instant cash.
One of the biggest mistakes is deciding too quickly. Take the time to compare several vehicles and don't let a seller rush you. A used motorhome is a big investment, and waiting an extra day can save you a lot of money.
Another pitfall is underestimating the maintenance costs. Ask about the history of the engine and bodywork repairs. A motorhome that has been standing still for a long time can have hidden defects, such as a seized brake or a leaking water pump.
Finally: don't forget to think about where you will store the motorhome. A covered garage is ideal, but not everyone has that space. More tips on finding a suitable garage or repair shop can be found in our article about finding a garage for your motorhome.
