A Carthago fridge that does not cool on any power source usually points to a voltage problem or a faulty thermostat.

A Carthago fridge that does not cool on any power source usually points to a voltage problem or a faulty thermostat. With a Dometic or Thetford in a Carthago, the cause is often in the power supply, fuses or the set mode.
First check the power supply and fuses, then the specific parts per power source, such as the gas burner or the circuit board. In Carthago campers, fridges from Dometic or Thetford are almost always installed, and each has its own typical ailments.
A fridge that does not cool in your Carthago can have several causes, depending on whether you run it on 12V, 230V or gas. Always start with the basics: is the fridge switched on, is the door properly closed and has the thermostat not been accidentally set to 'off' or the lowest setting? Then check the fuses in the central distribution board and possibly the separate fuse at the fridge itself.
Carthago usually fits absorption fridges from Dometic (formerly Electrolux) or Thetford. With Dometic models from the 8-series and 9-series, a faulty circuit board or a bad thermostat is more common. Thetford fridges, on the other hand, have a sensitive gas ignition and an electronic control that can fail during power surges. Look at the type plate inside the fridge to determine the exact model, which makes diagnosis much easier.

The costs depend heavily on the part. A new thermostat costs roughly between 50 and 120 euros, a circuit board quickly 200 to 400 euros, and a new heating element 60 to 150 euros. Add 1 to 2 hours of labour at 60 to 90 euros per hour. With older appliances, it is sometimes no longer economically viable to repair them.
If you do not want the hassle or the repair turns out to be too expensive, selling can be a sensible choice. Find out how much your Carthago is still worth via our page about the market value of a motorhome or sell it directly to us via selling a Carthago.
