A Frankia fridge that cools on 12V but not on gas usually points to a blocked burner or a faulty thermocouple. If the fridge is completely silent on all power sources, there's a good chance the control board or the cooling unit itself is no longer functioning.

A Frankia fridge that cools on 12V but not on gas usually points to a blocked burner or a faulty thermocouple. If the fridge is completely silent on all power sources, there's a good chance the control board or the cooling unit itself is no longer functioning. First check each power source: 12V requires the engine to be running, 230V a proper mains connection, and gas a good flame and gas pressure.
Not every fault is equally serious. Sometimes it's a matter of a fuse, poor gas pressure, or a control board that needs resetting, but it can equally be that the cooling unit itself has given up.
Frankia has been building refrigerators from the two major brands for years: Dometic and Thetford. Both have their own typical quirks, but the basic diagnosis remains the same. Always start with the simplest checks: is the refrigerator level? Is there adequate ventilation behind the appliance? And does the display or lighting still work?
If the refrigerator does not work on any power source, there is a good chance that the electronic control or the power module is faulty. On Dometic models with an LCD display, an empty or failing display board is more common than you might think. On Thetford units with a rotary knob, the thermostat or gas regulator is a classic suspect. Be sure to also consult our general explanation about a camper refrigerator that does not work for a step-by-step plan per power source.
An absorption refrigerator operates on three sources, but each source has its own typical faults:
The costs for a repair vary widely. A new heating element costs roughly 50 to 150 euros, a thermocouple 30 to 80 euros, but a new circuit board or cooling unit can run up to 600 to 1,200 euros, excluding labour. With an older appliance, it is sometimes more sensible to look at the market value of your motorhome and decide whether an expensive repair is still justified.
On Dometic refrigerators from series 7, 8, and 10, an error code on the display often points to a problem with the gas flame or the 12V supply. A hard reset (power off, wait 10 minutes, restart) sometimes resolves software faults. On Thetford models with a mechanical thermostat, the gas pressure regulation is crucial: too low a pressure gives a weak flame and insufficient cooling. Also always check that the refrigerator is properly sealed in the built-in cabinet, as a lack of ventilation leads to overheating and failure.
Are you unsure whether a repair is still worth it? Sometimes it is wiser to sell your Frankia and invest in a younger model. We would be happy to give you a realistic estimate of the current value.
