Is your Laika suffering from water damage or damp?

As a camper technician, I regularly see Laikas with moisture problems. The most common weak spots are the roof edges, roof hatches, windows, and all sealant seams. Especially on older models or after a poorly executed repair, water can penetrate. Laika typically uses an aluminium sandwich panel for the roof, which is itself quite resistant to moisture, but the connections and penetrations are critical. So always check the sealant edges around roof hatches, the window rubbers, and the corner profiles.

How does Laika score on watertightness? Generally quite well, but it strongly depends on the model year and maintenance. Newer models have better seals and tighter production. Nevertheless, a camper remains a vehicle that moves and vibrates, which can cause seams to split open. An annual check of the sealant seams is not an unnecessary luxury. Moisture measurement and diagnosis

A moisture measurement is the only way to be certain about the condition of your Laika. With a moisture meter, you probe suspicious areas, such as around windows, under the roof hatch, and in the corners of the walls. Values above 15% indicate a problem. Also watch for visual signs: discolouration, a musty smell, peeling wallpaper, or soft panels. Sometimes the damage is hidden behind cupboards or upholstery, so a thorough inspection is necessary.

• Check the sealant seams around roof hatches and windows for cracks or lifting.
• Measure the moisture percentage at several points, especially near penetrations.
• Look for discolouration or a musty smell in cupboards and under beds.
• Inspect the roof edges and corner profiles for corrosion or gaps.

Repair or sell?

Small leaks are often easy to repair: renew sealant seams, replace a window rubber, or reseal a roof hatch. For larger water damage, such as affected panels or structural damage, costs can rise to several thousand euros. Then consider whether the investment still outweighs the value of the camper.
