A motorhome that won't start after months of inactivity points in nine out of ten cases to a drained starter battery or spoiled diesel.

A motorhome that won't start after months of inactivity points in nine out of ten cases to a drained starter battery or spoiled diesel. On a Fiat Ducato, the most common base for campers, this often occurs because the leisure battery secretly keeps drawing power or because the diesel in the tank oxidises. You usually only hear a weak clicking from the starter motor, or the engine does turn over but immediately stalls.
A thorough diagnosis is still needed, because a worn starter motor or a clogged fuel filter can also be the culprit. Don't leave a flat battery for too long, as deeply discharged batteries permanently lose capacity.
A motorhome that won't start after months in storage is a common problem. Especially with the Fiat Ducato, the most common base for campervans, these complaints often arise. Fortunately, you can check a lot yourself before calling in a garage.
After a long period of inactivity, the starter battery is often deeply discharged. Even if the lights still work, the voltage may be too low to turn the starter motor powerfully. Measure the battery voltage: below 12.4 volts, recharging is needed. Use a trickle charger or jump leads. Note: a battery that has been completely drained several times loses capacity and may need to be replaced.
Diesel becomes old after a few months and can separate or attract water. Biodiesel in particular is prone to degradation. Starting problems due to bad fuel often manifest as spluttering or stalling. Replace the fuel or add an additive. Also check the AdBlue level: if the AdBlue tank is empty, the engine will refuse to start.
In a diesel that has been idle for a long time, injectors can stick or become clogged. The particulate filter (DPF) can also become full due to incomplete regeneration. Symptoms are difficult starting, white smoke, or the engine going into limp mode. Sometimes a cleaning agent helps, but professional cleaning is often required.
If there is air in the fuel lines, for example after an empty tank or filter replacement, the engine will not start. On the Fiat Ducato, there is usually a hand pump on the fuel filter. Pump until you feel resistance and no more air bubbles are visible. Consult your vehicle's manual for this.
Proper winter storage with a trickle charger and a full fuel tank prevents many of these problems. However, it can still happen that the engine does not start after months of inactivity. In that case, a diagnosis by a specialist is recommended.
