A Rapido fridge that no longer cools while the motorhome is on 230V often points to a faulty heating element or a circuit board not passing on voltage.

A Rapido fridge that no longer cools while the motorhome is on 230V often points to a faulty heating element or a circuit board not passing on voltage. In a Rapido, it's usually a Dometic or Thetford fridge, and often the cause is a faulty circuit board, thermocouple or poor gas flame. Depending on the problem, repair can cost from tens to hundreds of euros.
A fridge that doesn't work at all rarely has one universal cause. The correct diagnosis depends on the type of fridge, the energy source used and the specific error message.
Rapido has been building refrigerators from Dometic and Thetford for years. Both brands have their own typical quirks, but the basic check is similar. If the refrigerator does not work on any power source, first check the 12V supply and the fuses. With an absorption refrigerator, a little 12V is always needed for the electronic control, even when cooling on gas or 230V.
After that, it is worth testing each power source. On 230V, the heating element may have burned out. On gas, the burner is often dirty or the thermocouple worn out. On 12V (while driving), it is usually a relay or a voltage drop due to cables that are too thin. You can read more background on these three systems in our general explanation about a camper refrigerator that does not work.
With Dometic refrigerators from the 8-series and 10-series, a defective power board is common. Symptoms are a flashing display, no response to buttons, or a refrigerator that switches off after a few minutes. With Thetford models with a rotary knob for gas ignition, the piezo igniter or the gas pressure regulator is a classic culprit.
Specific to Rapido: some models have the refrigerator behind a narrow door, which means the ventilation behind the appliance is poor. This can cause overheating and failure, especially in warm weather. Check that the ventilation grilles are clear and that the refrigerator is not built in too tightly.
A small repair such as a new thermocouple or a cleaned gas burner usually costs 80 to 200 euros, including labour. A new circuit board for a Dometic or Thetford can cost up to 300 to 500 euros, depending on the model. If the cooling unit itself is leaking, the bill can quickly rise to over 1000 euros. In that case, an economic assessment is needed.
