Laika boiler not producing hot water: what's going on?

A Laika motorhome is known for its quality, but even here the boiler can let you down. Usually it involves a Truma Combi (combination of heating and boiler) or an Alde system on the more expensive models. Sometimes a separate Truma boiler is fitted. Most common causes per energy source

Does the boiler run on gas? Then the ignition may be dirty or the gas pressure too low. On electric operation, the heating element is often burnt out or the thermostat is faulty. A safety valve that sticks or an air lock in the system can also block things. Always check the fuses first and whether there is enough water in the boiler.

• No power: check the boiler fuse and the residual current device.
• No gas: is the gas bottle open? Is the gas pressure regulator okay? Sometimes the pipe needs bleeding.
• Water pressure: too low pressure or a closed tap can switch off the boiler.
• Electronics: an error code on the display often points to a specific fault.

What does a repair cost?

The costs depend heavily on the part. A new heating element costs roughly between 80 and 200 euros, a circuit board quickly 300 to 600 euros, excluding labour. Expect to pay 60 to 100 euros per hour for a diagnosis at a dealer. Sometimes a simple reset or replacing a fuse is enough, but with an older unit, a complete replacement of the boiler can run to more than 1500 euros.
