A boiler that does not provide hot water can have several causes. It is important to first check whether the problem occurs on gas, on 230V, or on both. If the boiler does not work on any energy source, there is often a general problem such as an empty tank, a faulty circuit board, or a blown fuse. If it works on gas but not on electricity, or vice versa, the fault is usually in that specific circuit.
A common cause is an empty boiler or an activated FrostControl safety valve. This valve, especially on Truma boilers, opens automatically at temperatures around freezing to prevent damage. If the valve is open, water drains away and the boiler cannot heat up. Check that the valve is closed and refill the boiler. Bleed the system via the hot water tap until a steady stream comes out.
If the boiler does not work on gas, first check that there is enough gas and that the gas tap is open. Listen for the ignition clicking. On a Truma Combi or Alde boiler, a dirty burner or a faulty ignition electrode could be the cause. Also check the boiler's fuse on the 12V circuit, as the electronics need power to ignite. An annual inspection of the gas system can prevent problems.
For electric operation, the heating element may have burned out, especially if the boiler was ever switched on without water. Measure the resistance of the element with a multimeter; infinite resistance indicates a fault. Also check the 230V fuse in the motorhome and any separate fuse for the boiler. Sometimes the thermostat or the circuit board is faulty, which requires a more complex repair.
