In this guide we cover the most important aspects: from purchase and costs to maintenance and sale.
The price of a motorhome depends on three factors: type, age and condition.
Second-hand prices are considerably lower, but the spread is wide. Damaged or non-running motorhomes have a lower market value, but are still sellable to a buyer who will collect them on site.
The three main types each have their pros and cons. The semi-integrated is one choice: the cab is original, but the living area is built with a fixed wall. That gives good insulation and a more spacious feel than a campervan, without the high price tag of a fully integrated model.
The fully integrated offers interior space and driving comfort. The entire body is one unit, so there is no annoying transition between cab and living area. You notice this especially on long journeys and in cold weather. The disadvantage: a fully integrated is more expensive to buy and maintain, and due to its larger dimensions less manoeuvrable in narrow streets.
The campervan is the most compact variant. It is built on a van chassis and therefore easier to park and more fuel-efficient.
A motorhome has two maintenance areas: the vehicle part and the living part. The vehicle follows the same schedule as a regular car: oil changes, brake checks, tyre replacement.
The living area requires specific attention. The water system must be completely drained before winter to prevent frost damage.
If you are not handy or have no time, you can outsource the maintenance. More details about the costs can be found in our guide on motorhome maintenance.
You place an advert, wait for responses, let interested parties come and view, and negotiate the price. During that period the motorhome remains insured and maintained, which entails extra costs. For those who want to get rid of their motorhome quickly, that is not an ideal route.
A professional buyer offers a faster alternative. You request a quote online, receive a price based on make, model, year of manufacture and condition, and if you agree the buyer collects the motorhome free of charge. Payment is made on site by bank transfer. This way you avoid viewing days, negotiations and the risk that the buyer drops out.
Damaged or non-running motorhomes are also sellable. A buyer with their own collection service has the right equipment to take a motorhome from your driveway without inspection or preparation. That is especially handy for owners whose motorhome has been standing still for years or who have no time to make it road-ready. Read how that works on our page about selling a motorhome with immediate cash.
Buying a second-hand motorhome requires more than a test drive. First check the paperwork: inspection certificate, maintenance history and any damage claims. Ask for the invoices of major repairs, such as a new timing belt or a replaced roof light. These give a good picture of how the previous owner treated the vehicle.
Then look thoroughly for signs of damp. A musty smell, discoloured spots on the ceiling or loose wallpaper indicate leakage. Damp damage is expensive to repair and affects the structure. Take a moisture meter with you or have a purchase inspection carried out by a specialised company.
Finally, check the technical condition of the living area: does the fridge work on gas and 12V, does the boiler work, do all cupboard doors close properly? Test the heating and the boiler, even in summer.
Not everyone has space on their own driveway.
Preferably choose a storage facility with camera surveillance and a secured site. Also ask whether there is a power connection, so you can keep the batteries topped up with a trickle charger.
For those who no longer use their motorhome and want to save on storage costs, selling is a logical step. A buyer collects the motorhome free of charge, even if it has been in storage for months. This eliminates not only the monthly cost, but also the worry about maintenance and insurance. More about collection can be found on our page about motorhome collection.
