Replacing motorhome tires: when and what to look out for

Replace camper tires after six to eight years, even if the tread is still more than sufficient. Due to long periods of standing and high load, they age faster than they wear out: the rubber dries out and hairline cracks appear in the sidewall.

When should I replace my motorhome's tires?

Why age matters more than tread

A motorhome stands still a lot, carries almost its maximum weight permanently, and often sits in exactly the same spot for months. That is the worst possible combination for a tire. Blowouts on campers are therefore almost always aging fractures, not wear.

Choose camper tires (CP marking): these have reinforced sidewalls for permanent loading and higher pressures. Regular van tires (C) can work, but CP is the better choice for vehicles that sit still a lot.
Check the pressure monthly: camper tires usually run at considerably higher pressures than passenger cars; the correct values can be found in the manual or on the sticker near the door.
Expect a serious amount: a set of decent camper tires including mounting and alignment can easily cost hundreds of euros. With a second axle or dual wheels, that goes up further.

What does the DOT code on my tires mean?

The last four digits of the DOT code indicate the production week and production year. For example, 2519 stands for week 25 of 2019. Older than six to eight years means replace, regardless of the tread.

Do I need winter tires on my motorhome?

Not mandatory in Belgium, but if you drive to the snow in winter, you fall under the situational winter tire requirement in countries like Germany and France. All-season camper tires are then a practical middle ground.

Do you arrange transport if my tires are too old to drive on?
