First think of a blown fuse for the device or too low a voltage from the leisure battery. Only then does a software lock after disconnecting the battery or an outdated device come into play.
With a flat or deeply discharged leisure battery, the radio may still light up briefly but produce no sound or reception. Always measure the battery voltage under load, not just at rest.
A radio, navigation or camera screen that no longer switches on is annoying but rarely unsolvable. As a motorhome technician, I see this problem regularly, and often the cause is simpler than you think. Always start with the basics: check the fuse of the device. This is usually in the fuse box of the cab or near the device itself. Replace a blown fuse with one of exactly the same rating, otherwise you risk more damage.
After the fuse, the leisure battery is the next suspect. Too low a voltage can cause the device not to start up or to switch itself off. Measure the voltage with a multimeter: anything below 12.2 volts is suspicious. Charge the battery or have it tested. Another classic is the software lock after disconnecting the battery. Some manufacturers then require a code or a reset procedure. This code is often in the instruction booklet or on a sticker in the glovebox.
Interference from a poor antenna or a loose connector also occurs. Check that the antenna cable is securely attached, both to the device and to the antenna base. With DAB reception, an outdated antenna or poor earthing can cause dropouts. And honestly, many original 2-DIN units in motorhomes ten years old or older are simply worn out. The touchscreen no longer responds, the navigation maps are outdated and updates are no longer available. Replacement is then often the best option.
A simple fuse or a software reset costs you almost nothing. A new antenna or a cable repair is usually between 50 and 150 euros, depending on the model. A new 2-DIN multimedia unit with navigation, DAB+ and camera connection starts at around 300 euros, excluding installation. If you have it installed by a specialist workshop, expect to pay 100 to 200 euros extra. These prices are of course rough ranges and may vary.
Are you unsure whether the repair is still worthwhile? Sometimes the cost of a new unit plus installation is higher than the residual value of your motorhome. In that case, it may be wiser to sell the motorhome as a whole. But that is a personal decision.
