A Rapido that produces hot water on gas but not on 230V usually has a faulty heating element or a loose plug connection in the Truma Combi. With an Alde system, the lack of hot water often points to a faulty 12V circulation pump or an empty expansion tank. First check that the system is set to the correct energy source and that the boiler is actually filled.
The exact cause depends on the type of system and the energy source you use. Sometimes it's a simple setting, sometimes a more expensive part such as a circuit board or heating element.
Rapido has been fitting Truma Combi units for years, often the Combi 4 or 6. On the more expensive models and larger A-class motorhomes, there is regularly an Alde system, which runs on gas and 230V or 12V. Some older or more compact campers have a separate Truma boiler (for example, the 10-litre Boiler). Each system has its own typical quirks.
If you are heating on gas and there is no hot water, first check that the gas bottle is open and that gas is coming from the hob. With the Truma Combi, the ignition can sometimes fail due to a dirty burner or a worn ignition electrode. With Alde, the boiler often shows a fault code on the display, such as 'Overheating' or 'No gas'. Check the manual to see what the code means.
If you are running on 230V, the heating element may be faulty. Truma Combi units have a 230V element of 850 or 1800 watts; this element can burn out, especially after a winter without use. Also check the fuse in the motorhome and the residual current device. With Alde, the element is inside the boiler itself and is more expensive to replace.
Another classic issue is the safety valve or pressure relief valve. If it keeps leaking or no longer seals, the pressure drops and the boiler cannot hold hot water. Sometimes the valve is simply dirty or scaled up. An air lock in the system or an empty boiler due to an incorrect winterising procedure can also block things.
Costs vary. A new heating element for a Truma Combi costs roughly between 150 and 300 euros, excluding fitting. A new ignition unit or gas valve is in the same range. With Alde, a circuit board or circulation pump can easily cost 400 to 800 euros. A safety valve is cheaper, often under 50 euros, but replacing it requires some skill. If in doubt, have a motorhome technician look at it, because tampering with gas and 230V is not without risk.
